Sonoma Secrets and the Back Roads to Wine Country

We headed out from the Santa Cruz mountains, plugged in Sonoma and away we went. How did we ever manage without GPS! We have been doing wine blog’s and wine articles for three years now and have never made it to Sonoma Area. I know, can you believe it? We both were looking forward to this. Once we turned onto highway 37, we started seeing direction signs to Sonoma Wine Country. We turned onto Highway 121, one of the two main Highways that all the wineries are situated on. Since we had not had lunch we began looking for a place to eat. We were looking forward to sitting down and having a relaxing lunch at a restaurant. The more Deli’s and Diner’s we passed, the hungrier we got. We would come to another stop sign and say “oh no, no restaurants”? Hope and hunger now made it our mission of finding a restaurant which became more important than getting closer to our where we were staying. Finally!!!!!!! We came to a sign that said…….”Bar and grill”. We jumped out of our car walked across the cute little bridge with a seasonal stream and walked into this restaurant with a happy, hungry gleam in our eyes. We were greeted by a hostess who then proceeded to tell us they were closed……Come onnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!…..Seeing our desperation she asked if we liked Indian food? We said “Sure” at this point we were pretty much up for anything. She directed us next door to a Indian restaurant.img1

We were glad this Indian restaurant was next door, because it gave us a chance to try something different. We walked into “Yeti’s Nepalese-Indian Restaurant”. We were greeted by the owner, and Chef “Narayan”.We sat by a window over looking the courtyard in Jack London Village in Glen Ellen. What a great restaurant full of ambiance, We ordered hot tea to start with, and since it was a bit brisk outside it was a welcome treat. The owner was very accommodating and everything sounded absolutely wonderful…. We chose the mixed plate of grilled lamb, chicken and fish and shrimp. Our meal arrived sizzling on a bed of onions and peppers and smelling magnificent!!!!!

It really was fantastic! You need to get in your car and drive there immediately. In fact we wish we were there now! The atmosphere, service, and food were just amazing. I’d get sidetracked, but I could just devote a whole blog to our eating experience at Yeti’s.

The Owner of the Restaurant showed us to our seating, He gave us our menus, took our order, poured our wine and waited on us. It was not until we were leaving that we found out Narayan was the owner. A little side note, we got to Yeti’s Restaurant at 2:55pm. We did not know this at the time but they closed at 3pm. They accommodated us even though it was just prior to closing. What great service! Our meal hit the spot, delicious! Narayan and our Yeti’s experience sent us on our way full and pleased we had discovered this restaurant in Glen Ellen. We will go back!!!

We then headed to The Secret Cottages at Glen Ellen Inn & Martini Bar, not far down the road. We originally wanted something quaint and peaceful. Someplace where it would make our stay that much more enjoyable. Glen Ellen Inn Secret Cottages in Glen Ellen Town were just what we wanted for our stay. Perfect!! We decided to check out our room before we headed out to do any wine tasting. We walked to our cottage in the back, and noticed a small bridge with a stream running directly behind our cottage, such a picturesque sight!

We opened the door and were pleasantly surprised. The cottage was clean and the d?cor was what you would envision for the area, very charming, and very private. We had a welcome basket with fruit and baked goods as well as a full bar. A Jacuzzi tub with complimentary bath salts was a perfect addition as well… It was just what we wanted for our relaxing get away! I guess we did devote a whole blog of just our eating and getting to our room experience…..

We jumped back in the car and headed to out to do some wine tasting…..

Overall though Westminster’s notoriously tight licensing rules have effectively put the block on new late licenses in Soho stifling the scene especially with the chain bars continuing their onslaught gobbling up independent venues whenever they can. In addition a lot of Soho’s bar activity has migrated to the private members clubs like Soho House and Vanilla making it that much harder for the casual drinkers. Club Insider also only recommends Soho weekdays as at weekends its far too touristey as the bridge and tunnel brigade descend.

East London is where the action is on the new bar front with Shoreditch and now Brick Lane as the place where well moneyed hipsters like to open to open new venues. Leaders of the pack have to be Lounge Lover and the humongous (but 100% private) Shoreditch House but the like of Home, Last Days of Decadence and Hoxton Bar and Grill all have their own charm too. In fact along Brick Lane or Shoreditch High Street achingly cool bars are now a dime a dozen. All of which amusingly has created a back lash with many hipsters now declaring their love for their tired old local over the flashy charms of the style bar(s) next door. A honourable mention for Cargo and 93 Feet East too although both are really more music venues than bars. Anything missing? Well possibly a few more live music venues for starters.

For North London read Camden with as many music pub clubs per square mile as there are style bars in Shoreditch and private members clubs in Soho. From the achingly cool Proud to the rather run down but ever popular Monarch Camden is the home of the indie bar (or rather pub) club…… and nothing else. Actually that’s not quite true Camden and its environs also house several very good gastropubs (the Enterprise being the best) and a couple of style bars too of which Fifty Five is our favourite.

West London unfortunately suffers from the deadly RBKC (that’s the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea) disease who in their wisdom have effectively put the kibosh on new late night venue openings. Club Insider however likes the Electric Cinema (part private) Paradise in Kensal Green and Notting Hill Arts Club.

That leaves South London? A combination of laxer licensing laws and cheaper property prices has created a ripe environment for bar entrepreneurs wanting to try something different. Cue Lost Society and Lost Angel with their glitzy 30s themed take on d?cor and cocktails not to mention The Loft in Clapham. All of these venues have been picking up numerous bar awards from Time Out and other magazines much to the annoyance of their North of The River London rivals. More recently Peacock Bar in Clapham Junction has been making waves with its clever combination of burlesque and cabaret early with retro 80s and 90s Djs later. Having picked up just about every award there is for burlesque and cabaret Club Insider hears they are about to so something big in the West End very shortly. Watch this space.

Spain Travel Information

Spain is full of magical points of interest. There’s Madrid in the center, Barcelona to the northeast and Seville to the south–just to name a few. Before you pack your bags and head off to Spain, here’s some great travel information. Knowing the climate and when to go can make all the difference in the world.

The Climate

There’s nothing worse than taking a dream vacation and getting blindsided by poor weather. It would be foolish to just rush off to Spain without knowing what the conditions will be like once you arrive.

Did you know that Spain’s summers typically reach 90-100?F? If you don’t like the warm to hot weather, stay away from Spain during the months of June, July and August. The main points of interest may get a bit unbearable for you. However, air conditioning is commonplace in the hotels.

May and October, which are just before and after the summer, make great times to visit Spain. The Falls are beautiful.

Key Travel Tip

Here’s a great Spain travel tip for you. If you hate overcrowding and love the beaches, don’t visit Spain in July or August. During these two months, the Mediterranean Sea is perfect for enjoyment. Herds of tourists and locals flock to the beaches to enjoy it. It’s a seasonal event.

Since many locals hit the beaches, you might find shops closed or operating minimally. The Mediterranean Sea isn’t great for swimming in many months out of the year, so many look forward to these couple of months each year.

Planning

Spain offers many festivals throughout the year. A popular one is the Fiesta De San Fermin. You probably know one of its events–the running of the bulls. Pamplona is a special place each July.

Do some research and plan your trip around a festival that you would really love to see.
