The Three Best Pubs in Brighton

Brighton has one of the highest number of pubs per head of population for anywhere in the UK. It’s a tourist city on the south coast of the UK, less than an hour’s train ride from London. There’s a great social scene in the city, and most of it revolves around pubs and drinking, from the cram-them-in tourist bars, to the family friendly traditional pub.

It’s difficult to narrow down the huge selection to the best three, so I’ve cheated and given an extra venue in each category:

Best pub for food

It’s a foodie town and many Brighton pubs offer excellent grub, but the best has to be the Sussex Yeoman, on Guildford Road. A regularly updating menu of fine, locally sourced, fresh ingredients cooked by a chef who really loves food and understands how to make meals that will blow your socks off.

Locally the Yeoman’s Sunday roasts are legendary and so popular if you want one it’s best to book at least a week in advance to ensure you get a seat, and that’s with two or three servings each Sunday. If you’re not that organised, you’re welcome to turn up and enjoy a beer while you hope for a slot to open up. The bar staff are very friendly so at least you can enjoy a nice chat while your hunger grows looking at the gorgeous food being eaten around you.

Vegetarians are well served in Brighton, and the best veggie and vegan pub food is served in The George on Trafalgar Road. It regularly wins prizes for it’s vegetarian fare, which is so good it’s even made this inveterate meat-eater think switching to an all-veg diet wouldn’t be so bad.

Best pub for beer

Brighton has it’s fair share of chain pubs serving the same three lagers, a poor cider and a mediocre ale, but look around a little and you can find a number of wonderful independent pubs serving local beers from Harveys and Dark Star, two Sussex breweries. You’ll receive a fantastic pint in any of these pubs, but in my opinion the best beer to be had is in The Greys pub, on Southover Street.

As well as having a regularly changing selection of properly cared for local beers, and beer tasting festivals, the tiny Greys pub also has a range of carefully selected Belgian beers to choose from. Their food is pretty cracking too. In fact, the only thing stopping The Greys being the perfect pub is it’s size. Unless you get there early, there’s never anywhere to sit in what is one of Brighton’s smallest pubs. Still, even if it is busy it’s well worth squeezing in for a quick pint, the quality is well worth the lack of elbow room.

Honourable mentions go to The Battle and The Evening Star, both close to Brighton’s central rail station. The Battle has a range of well kept Harveys beers, brewed just eleven miles away in Lewes, and the Evening Star has some marvellous Dark Star beers, also locally brewed. Both will give you a friendly welcome as well as a fine beer.

Best pub quiz

There’s nothing like a good pub quiz to give you something to argue over with your friends when you’re having a pint. There’s not a huge number in Brighton, given the number of pubs, but you could probably find one on every day of the week if you’re quiz obsessed.

For a fun free quiz, The George Quiz at, unsurprisingly, The George on Trafalgar Street, is the best to go to. Get there early and have some nice vegetarian food, as mentioned above.

The quiz is a mixture of general knowledge and specialist rounds, with a wide enough range that you’ll be able to answer something over the evening. It’s free to enter and there’s generally meal vouchers and some beer as the prizes for the top teams. If you have sensitive hearing, take ear plugs as Mike, the very affable host, has a voice that doesn’t drop below eleven, even when he’s using a PA system. For regular visitors, have a check for the quiz on Facebook as Mike sometimes gives hints about what rounds are coming up, and you get to request rounds on particular topics.

As an honourable mention, The Caroline of Brunswick pub hosts The Geekest Link once a month. It’s a SF/Fantasy/geekery themed quiz and a lot of fun if you’re at all geeky minded.

The wide range of pubs in Brighton means there’s something for everyone. If you’re visiting the city, it’s well worth having a wander around areas like the North Laine, Hanover and The Lanes to find the gems of independently run pubs. If you’re a local, you’ll know how spoilt for choice you are.

Is the Nightlife in Your City a Driving Force?

The nightlife of a city is its driving force. A city with an imaginative and highly charged night is often a city that has plenty of residual energy during the waking hours of the day. Keep your city attractive to the young and those who still believe themselves to be young by providing an active nightlife to keep them happy and coming back for more.

One amusing discovery for many is that nightclubs in different cities almost always offer something a little bit unique to that city. For those who are looking for something that is dissimilar to any other experience, the New York life has plenty to offer. The Vegas nightlife however isn’t the only game in the country and you will find a healthy nightlife in many other great cities across the nation.

For example, if your prefer more stylish digs and a posh atmosphere the trendy clubs of Los Angeles nightlife fame may prove more entertaining than some of the more famous Las Vegas nightlife haunts. You may find many stars in the bars of Hollywood and some perhaps from the big screen; regardless you will notice a markedly different atmosphere than in Vegas.

The varied style and pace of NYC nightlife makes it a force to be reckoned with as far as nightlife scenes goes and offers a little something for almost everyone. New York is home to a few boroughs that each brings its own little bit of style to the city and to the famous New York life. While Manhattan is certainly the height of sophistication other parts of the city offer some of the best night life entertainment for the hip-hop crowd, the nightlife dance club crowd, or the crowd that prefers a little more show and less tell in their night time entertainment. Wherever you fit into the nightlife spectrum it is quite likely that NYC has some entertainment that will be just right for you.

When it comes to nightlife, Texas marches to its own drummer. With so many options in nightlife activities such as: Houston nightlife, Dallas nightlife El Paso nightlife, and San Antonio , it’s no small wonder that the decision itself is a Texas sized event.

California has more to offer by way of nightlife than the offerings of a Los Angeles nightlife alone-in fact, the San Francisco life is quite energetic in certain areas of town. If you have a need for nightlife, San Francisco nightlife is likely to have a place for you whether you are heterosexual, homosexual, or you just want to dance. The Sacramento nightlife is a little more conservative than many neighboring cities but still manages to have a rather boisterous nightlife of its own.

Sonoma Secrets and the Back Roads to Wine Country

We headed out from the Santa Cruz mountains, plugged in Sonoma and away we went. How did we ever manage without GPS! We have been doing wine blog’s and wine articles for three years now and have never made it to Sonoma Area. I know, can you believe it? We both were looking forward to this. Once we turned onto highway 37, we started seeing direction signs to Sonoma Wine Country. We turned onto Highway 121, one of the two main Highways that all the wineries are situated on. Since we had not had lunch we began looking for a place to eat. We were looking forward to sitting down and having a relaxing lunch at a restaurant. The more Deli’s and Diner’s we passed, the hungrier we got. We would come to another stop sign and say “oh no, no restaurants”? Hope and hunger now made it our mission of finding a restaurant which became more important than getting closer to our where we were staying. Finally!!!!!!! We came to a sign that said…….”Bar and grill”. We jumped out of our car walked across the cute little bridge with a seasonal stream and walked into this restaurant with a happy, hungry gleam in our eyes. We were greeted by a hostess who then proceeded to tell us they were closed……Come onnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!…..Seeing our desperation she asked if we liked Indian food? We said “Sure” at this point we were pretty much up for anything. She directed us next door to a Indian restaurant.img1

We were glad this Indian restaurant was next door, because it gave us a chance to try something different. We walked into “Yeti’s Nepalese-Indian Restaurant”. We were greeted by the owner, and Chef “Narayan”.We sat by a window over looking the courtyard in Jack London Village in Glen Ellen. What a great restaurant full of ambiance, We ordered hot tea to start with, and since it was a bit brisk outside it was a welcome treat. The owner was very accommodating and everything sounded absolutely wonderful…. We chose the mixed plate of grilled lamb, chicken and fish and shrimp. Our meal arrived sizzling on a bed of onions and peppers and smelling magnificent!!!!!

It really was fantastic! You need to get in your car and drive there immediately. In fact we wish we were there now! The atmosphere, service, and food were just amazing. I’d get sidetracked, but I could just devote a whole blog to our eating experience at Yeti’s.

The Owner of the Restaurant showed us to our seating, He gave us our menus, took our order, poured our wine and waited on us. It was not until we were leaving that we found out Narayan was the owner. A little side note, we got to Yeti’s Restaurant at 2:55pm. We did not know this at the time but they closed at 3pm. They accommodated us even though it was just prior to closing. What great service! Our meal hit the spot, delicious! Narayan and our Yeti’s experience sent us on our way full and pleased we had discovered this restaurant in Glen Ellen. We will go back!!!

We then headed to The Secret Cottages at Glen Ellen Inn & Martini Bar, not far down the road. We originally wanted something quaint and peaceful. Someplace where it would make our stay that much more enjoyable. Glen Ellen Inn Secret Cottages in Glen Ellen Town were just what we wanted for our stay. Perfect!! We decided to check out our room before we headed out to do any wine tasting. We walked to our cottage in the back, and noticed a small bridge with a stream running directly behind our cottage, such a picturesque sight!

We opened the door and were pleasantly surprised. The cottage was clean and the d?cor was what you would envision for the area, very charming, and very private. We had a welcome basket with fruit and baked goods as well as a full bar. A Jacuzzi tub with complimentary bath salts was a perfect addition as well… It was just what we wanted for our relaxing get away! I guess we did devote a whole blog of just our eating and getting to our room experience…..

We jumped back in the car and headed to out to do some wine tasting…..
