Deciding on a Bar Menu

Article by John Smith

Why do people go to bars? To drink and eat! The bar menu is an essential element to your business, one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. But, it is also the part where you can be the most creative, especially if you will be the main cook in your establishment.

When deciding on a menu, look at your theme. The theme of your bar determines everything, design, atmosphere, music playing, and yes the menu. In addition, unless you are running a bar and grill or other type of restaurant, your dishes should not be a full-course meal. Think easy to prepare, snack-like, familiar items.

The Pub Grub

Pub grub is the affectionate term given to the common bar foods, such hamburgers, chicken wings, nachos, and such. The majority of your customers will expect you to serve this type of food (unless you’re the only sushi bar in town!).

Spicy Chicken Wings

A crowd favorite, it can be placed under appetizers in most menus. Don’t forget the blue-cheese dressing!

Sandwiches

Deli sandwiches for lunch, grilled cheese, or even grilled chicken sandwiches can satisfy the hungers of your customers.

Hamburgers

The toppings on a hamburger are endless, though you’ll want to stick to easy-to-prepare such as cheese and non-cheese burgers, and other basic toppings.

This item is one area where you can differentiate from the competition well by offering the house hamburger. Exotic toppings include bacon, chicken, blue cheese, double-stack, and tofu burgers.

French Fries

French fries go with hamburgers, hot dogs, and pizza. Onion rings also show up on some menu offerings.

Pizza

This may be the most popular item on your menu. Pizza is great for social settings, and is easy to prepare and even easier to eat! Basic toppings are pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, multiples cheeses, and anchovies.

Offer a pizza that customers can only get at your bar! First, see what the competition doesn’t serve, then call the local pizza places and ask what are the most popular pizzas. Spice up your recipe and earn a profit! Buying pizza equipment can be a bit expensive, but the profits are sure worth it!

Besides just the typical food fares above, what regional recipes are common in your area? Frog legs are common in the Midwest, while chili may make an appearance in the Northern states, and fried shrimp is seen in the South. Use the regional specialty as a way to lure in customers, and if you can make it better, promote it!
